Everyone wishes to have a beautiful and flawless smile. Dissatisfaction with your smile can have a negative impact on your life, affecting your self-confidence and social life.

Thanks to cosmetic dentistry, it is now easy to achieve a perfect and natural-looking smile with dental veneers, also called porcelain veneers. When done by an expert, dental veneers can provide your smile, an instant makeover like no other method can.

What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, wafer-like dental appliances crafted from porcelain and made using a person’s teeth as a blueprint. They are bonded to the tooth surface by a dentist to create a natural-looking smile, and they positively impact oral health. Veneers are thus beneficial and are a fast solution to many dental concerns such as spacing, cracked, chipped, or worn-out teeth, crooked teeth, and too-small teeth.

Problems Addressed by Porcelain Veneers

  • Veneers conceal and fix a variety of dental problems like:
  • Gaps in between teeth
  • Crooked tooth presentation
  • Irregularly shaped or sized teeth
  • Tough stains on teeth

Veneers are also called “instant orthodontics” as they can correct cosmetic concerns related to the teeth’ poor positionings, such as tooth spacing and positioning. Thus, they are an effective solution for fixing many cosmetic problems impacting smiles.

The Porcelain Veneers Process

The entire procedure usually requires 2-3 dental visits – for consultation, to take the measurements of the veneers needed, and to apply them.

Diagnosis: In this first step, the patient’s teeth are examined for finding concerns like discoloration, cracks, and chipping and decide whether veneers are required.

Preparation of the tooth: About half a millimeter of enamel is removed from the teeth to make space for the veneer.

Preparation of the veneer:  The dentist submits the impressions of the teeth to the laboratory. It takes 15 to 30 days to prepare the porcelain veneer, which will appear like natural teeth.

Pre-bonding: The veneer is placed on the tooth and checked for fit and color before cementing it to the tooth. The perfect fit is obtained by making modifications that include grinding the veneer. The proper usage of bonding cement can help in adjusting the color.

Bonding: During the last step, the tooth is cleaned and roughened to provide a good grip for the veneer when placed. Now, the veneer is placed in the correct position by applying dental cement, and a special light beam is applied to activate the chemicals in the cement. This process helps the bonding of the veneer to the tooth firmly by hardening the cement quickly. Excess cement, if any, is removed, and the person’s bite is evaluated to ensure that the new additions are a natural fit.

Advantages of veneers

Porcelain veneers offer the following benefits:

  • They are mostly stain-resistant.
  • They look similar to the natural tooth.
  • They help to ensure better teeth health.
  • They help in adjusting the patient’s teeth color.

Veneers are not permanent but have to be replaced after a few years. However, its longevity can be increased by regular brushing, flossing, and avoiding stain-inducing foods.
